Our winter picnic spot at Kakra Mirjapur : visit to Baba Loknath Mandir at Kochua dham

It was a cool winter morning on 30Th December 2012 and we are out for family picnic. We have made our plan ready  to enjoy the picnic in a bucolic environment   at Kakra Mirja Nagar near Basirhat . This is not a conventional picnic spot. We have booked a Farm house near Kakra Mirja Nagar Station, 50 off form Kolkata and very close to Basirhat .

Our picnic spot was a garden house owned by local school teacher Najibor Rahman .  It was a big garden full of mango trees and surrounded by fields decorated with seasonal flowers, vegetables, bamboo jungle.  A small village PathSala beside our picnic spot creating a perfect charm for us to enjoy the proximity of village school.

Another attraction of this place is Baba Loknath Mandir at Kochua . From our picnic spot it is 3 Km journey. We took local van to reach Kochua . Koucha is a nice place to spend time with your family and have darsan of Baba Loknath .

I have gone 4 times to Baba Loknath Mandir at Kochua . But this time we went there with my fellow picnic friends . So enjoyment was different. Visit Dham before 12 Noon.

Road Journey to Baba Loknath Mandir at Kochua :

Most of the time , I have visited there by road journey  . From Kolkata is it about 50 Km Journey. You have to reach Barasat , then take Taki Road , drive about 30 Km and take right turn at Swarup Nagar from Taki Road . Road condition is not good at certain places.

You can reach Kochua Loknath Mandir by Train , take Hashnabad Local from Sealdha and drop at Kakra Mirja Nagar Station , take local van to reach the spot in 10-15 min .

Trust me, most of the times I went there by my car, but rail journey is more comfortable as road condition is not good there.

During our picnic day, we have enjouyed all these places in 2-3 hours . Then came back to picnic spot around 2 P.M and finished our lunch . Then we went out in nearby field  to see the vegetables plantation . Local farmers were plucking vegetables in their sacks. We enjoyed our time while fetching vegetables from garden and fields.

Bakkhali Tour: Enjoying my weekend in beautiful island

It was a very peaceful long drive from Kolkata to Bakkhali . After a long drive from Kolkata , we have reached Bakkhali around 11:30 AM on 3rd September 2012 . Since this is not a rush time, so we started from home without booking our hotels.

After crossing Frazerganj , we could see series of hotels along both sites of the NH 117 . We first drove up to BakKhali Bus stand for getting a feel of all road side views of hotels / lodges .

We have seen many good hotels and lodges , but we returned back and directly come to Seaview hotel . As it’s 500 meter away from Bakhali Bus stand . We have got reference for this hotel from relatives . So directly went inside to check the room availability . Yes  , we have got our room there . Very neat and clean hotel , excellent  services , moderate price ( Rs 450 /$10 ) for a double room . We have got road facing/sea facing room . From our balcony we could see the distant view of sea .

From our hotel Bakkhali Bus Stand is  500 meter and Frazerganj is 1.5 km . Awesome views of paddy fields , distand views of sealines , and bhajan from nearest hotel mandir made our mind cool  .Our hotel has beautiful temple inside the hotel compound

Evening we went to Bakkhali beach , you can park your car in nearest parking lot .

Best place for food lovers :

I have read reviews from Wiki travel  , so I have tried my dinner at Good restaurant near Bakkhali Bus stand , named Parijat Hotels . Trust me , food is not good at all , more over they have very limited options . You can see lots in  menus , but when to order , they give limited choices .

Then how enjoy foods at Bhakhlai ??

Here is a tip I have applied , in morning , I woke up at 7 am , just drove to nearest fish market at Bhakhali Bus stand , you can buy fresh fish or meat there . I have purchased 0.5 kg king porn and come back to hotel , give it to hotel cook  , advise them what we  like to have ( amount speices , or option etc )

Here is costing :

1. Cooking cost : Rs 50 ( $1 ) ( for 1 kg 100 Rs )

2. Fish: 150 ( ½ kg )

I am vegetarians, so wife and kids have very delicious and healthy lunch a hotels . As we can’t find very good restaurant there so next day we  tried with chicken cooked a hotel . Moreover leftover dish you can keep at freezer .

Morning you can walk across the road , sit nearby tea stall , talk to other morning walker and tourist .You can find many villagers selling fresh vegetable to tourists . No mad rush , no pollution , only nature will talk to you and make your stay pleasant .

If you  want to enjoy beauty of rural Bengal and   the taste of Bangladesh from a close quarter then Panitar is a best place to enjoy . This is a historical place too.  You can get talk to nature enriched with the  history of  Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay  . The Bandyopadhyay family originated in this  Panitar village near Basirhat,  This is the birth place of Gouri Devi . Gouri Devi was the writer’s first wife, but she died during childbirth a year after their marriage. Gouri’s death and Bibhutibhushan’s consequent loneliness led to a theme of tragedy that became a recurrent motif  in his early writings.

Bakkhali Tour : Long drive experience to this fantastic seaside resort !

It’s was 1st September 2012, we have set out for a long drive with my family for a weekend break at Bakkhali .  I have done some research on Internet about how to reach Bakkhali by road . In this post , I have shared my experience with my readers . I am not an expert man behind the wheel, but I drive very cautiously when I set out with my family.

Since I have started from New Brrackpore to take the route of Diamond Harbor road , so I have started early . I knew that I have to drive from North Kolkata to south Kolkata Direction . So I have to make a Kolkata Darsan drive ( 30 km boring drive inside city ) before reaching NH 117 . It’s 165 km drive from New Barrackpore to Bakkhali ( from Airport it is about 155 Km ) .

I have started early around 6 AM morning , reaching Behala taking the following route :  Airport —Eastern Bypass —-Ruby More—Gariahat More—–Durgapur Bridge—–then Behala—–Finally -Diamond Harbor Road ( NH117 ) . Even during that morning time I got some traffic. If you stay in north Kolkata area, better to start early to avoid city traffic .

After taking route of Diamond Harbor Road ( NH 117 ) , it was a smooth ride . On the way , you find Diamond Harbor where you can take break for breakfast and snacks . We avoided this time to stop here. As we need to reach Bakkhali early. So we finished our breakfast on the way.

Even if you start early from home, you can’t drive fast along NH117 as every 15 min drive, we have to face road crowd in small bazaar ( Village haat  )  along the National Highways .  I have faced crowd about 18 -20 times along the way. Otherwise, it’s a pleasant long drive from Diamond Harbor to Kakdip . (At Kakdip , we have purchased lots of fruits for home while returning . Here fruits are cheap .) After an hour drive we reached Namkhana .

Ferry Ghat

Ferry Ghat

Then I have faced a tough time . Since this was Saturday, I stood in queue for boarding on vessel with our car. Meanwhile, some car onboard vessel had some technical problem, we stood in car queue for about 2 hours. But , crossing the Hatania-Doania creek connecting Namkhana and Bahkhani , you have to wait about an hour . (During our home coming, we were only car on the other side  , so we had to wait for other cars to arrive at the Ghat – after all it’s a business for vessel owner to get his Berge full with vehicles to fetch good money in each trip ) . I could not enjoy Hatania-Doania creek journey on vessel . As this is boring waiting.

on a ferry boat - carrying our car

on a ferry boat – carrying our car

After crossing Hatania-Doania creek , we entered Bhakhali Main land . Now from here Bakkhali main tourist spot is 23 Km journey along same NH 117. Road is superb . You can drive above 100 Km/hr . But I prefer to drive slow to taste the country side views. Lots of villages are there along the way. But hardly any sound pollution here , nature and human are peacefully coexisted here . You get small markets, bazzar etc . While driving toward Bakkslai , I noticed  signboard of  Henry Island ( It is connected to NH117 by 3 km village road)  . After 15 min drive, I have noticed giant windmills welcoming us  on the way . Yes this is Frazerganj . Form here Bakkhali sea beach  and resorts are 2 km . After a 5 min drive I could  see lots of hotels . Lodges along the NH177 . Finally we reached Bakkhali around 12 noon ( as we are late 2 hours at creek crossing)  So reaching Bakkhali from Kolkata takes 4-5 hours ( safe mode driving ) .

You can enjoy nature, people , culture , foods if you drive at a moderate pace . Especially journey through the 23 km road distance through the Bakkhali main land was an awesome experience!

Looking for winter season picnic spots in and round Kolkata – a brief travel log from my journeys into Rural Bengal

Winter season sets in, and weather is really cool for picnic or family outing. I am also taking less work load this year end for small family picnic and nearby outings. Many people in Kolkata really think where to go this winter weekends. We are really become sick of crowded city place, busy life. We need peaceful nature and some outing at picnic stops near forest or rivers or at a village garden surrounded by greenery. I love to go out with my family and explore new places. Here I have mentioned few places where you can spend your day out with your family. This is based on my journey, so some of the information may have changed over time. This is an small effort to share experience of outing in rural Bengal .

This spot is a island surrounded by canal ( it’s created by local municipality for picnic only ) . This only picnic spot, so you can spend time with your family, playing games , you can get many other picnic parties there . I enjoyed this place very much.

If you are in Kolkata, you can make a visit and enjoy your time with your family at country side picnic spots.
